Two questions, not one

Most players below 1400 ask the board a single question every move: "what move do I play?" That question has no method behind it, so the answer comes out as whatever looks active.

Stronger players ask two questions, and they know which one the position is asking.

Tactics: what can I do immediately? Strategy: what do I want to have achieved in five moves?
